Los pilares de circonio fueron introducidos en la implantología dental como una alternativa de los pilares de metal. Debido a su biocompatibilidad, color y sus propiedades mecánicas, el circonio es un reemplazo adecuado para el pilar de metal. La adhesión bacteriana, que es importante en el mantenimiento de las restauraciones de circonio sin problemas periodontales, fue probada satisfactoriamente baja. Un beneficio principal es que no se esperan reacciones alérgicas cuando se utiliza el circonio. Además, no hay peligro de corrosión que es generalmente el problema con los pilares basados en metal. También dispone de su extraordinaria solidez y durabilidad que puede prolongarse por largos periodos de tiempo. Los pilares libres de metal también son resistentes a cualquier clase de ácido que puede interactuar con la boca.
